With only minor exceptions, the primary manufacturers of braille slates in the U.S. produce the same slates today that have been produced for more than forty years. With modern materials and modern manufacturing methods, it would seem that newer, better slates could be designed that would alleviate or eliminate some of the major drawbacks of present slates and make writing by hand as quick and efficient for blind persons as using a pencil is for sighted persons.

This exhibit examines many aspects of slate design and structure and presents examples of slates that have incorporated a feature that is illustrative of the point. Many of these slates are no longer produced and many were not produced under ideal manufacturing conditions so simply acquiring some of these items to improve the variety of available slates is not a viable option.

Materials

Limitations of Current Materials:
Sturdy metals are heavy;
Light metals bend easily;
Light anodized metals generally have a slight texture which reduces writing speed and comfort;
Many plastics become brittle;
Some materials can contribute to slate noise; and
Hard materials are slippery on writing surface.
Goal for Materials: To select and combine materials to achieve economy, comfort, and stability.

Photo -- Slate 111 from France shows a solid brass front providing stability and allowing for smooth, fast writing and a lightweight aluminum back reducing the overall weight. This pocket slate was manufactured by Association Valentin Hauy, Paris and has 8 lines of 18 cells. Other features include: two pairs of Dymo slots on back, top-hinged, and offset pins to produce interpoint braille.

Indigenous Knowledge
Issue 173
In the mid-1990s, the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the United States Agency for International Development launched a novel partnership. The International Cooperative Biodiversity Groups (ICBG) sought to bring together university researchers, pharmaceutical companies, non-government organisations and representatives of indigenous peoples into a consortium to identify genetic and biochemical materials that could prove commercially valuable. The venture was also intended to create innovative mechanisms to share with indigenous peoples the anticipated benefits from accurate identification of commercial profitable compounds.

Despite the prestigious names and institutions, results from the initiative remain uncertain at best, and little benefit has reached indigenous peoples.A key reason is that insufficient attention has been given to the basic question of how to think about indigenous knowledge and its relationship to power.

The contributions to this issue consider that question, arguing for greater attention to the contexts in which indigenous peoples live, indigenous knowledge is generated, and interactions between the putative indigenous/local and the alleged scientific/modern occur.

Furthermore, they stress the need for closer attention and deeper appreciation of the political relations for which easy conceptual categories often, inappropriately, come to stand. Such movements in perspective potentially lay the foundations for greater uncertainty in social outcomes and shifts in political relationships: it is precisely on favour of such indeterminacy and changes in asymmetric relations that the contributions are written. << Back

China blijft bouwen - augustus 2003

China worstelt eigenlijk al jaren met haar marine. Het lukt maar niet om schepen te bouwen die zich kunnen meten met westerse schepen. Maar sinds kort lijkt het er op dat hier langzaam verandering in komt.

De Houku klasse uit de jaren '50.

Een enkele is nog in de vaart. De Chinese marine heet (vertaald naar het Engels): People's Liberation Army Navy [PLAN]. Dit zegt in feite al genoeg over China en haar marine: jarenlang verwaarloosd. China heeft weliswaar een enorme kustlijn (zo'n 1500 km), maar heeft zich sinds de 15e eeuw niet meer gericht op de marine, maar op de landstrijdkrachten.
Halverwege de vorige eeuw gingen echter steeds meer stemmen op om aandacht te schenken aan de marine en is sinds 1950 een instituut voor de marine opgericht, waar officieren les kregen van vooral Russen. De Chinese marine richtte zich vooral op het kustgebied en had als belangrijkste taak om het vasteland te beschermen tegen een Amerikaanse (en jaren later een Russische) invasie.

Toen Rusland zich steeds meer ging bemoeien met de Chinese marine en ook materieel beschikbaar stelde groeide de zeemacht snel. Zeker toen in de jaren '70 20% van het Chinese defensie budget naar de marine ging. China ging steeds meer zelf ontwikkelen en maakte (pas) in 1985 haar eerste buitenlandse reis. De zeemacht groeide in 1987 uit tot (vwb grootte) de 3e marine ter wereld: 2.000 schepen en 350.000 man personeel! Nog steeds richtte de marine zich vooral op de kustwateren, maar hier kwam geleidelijk verandering in toen gekozen werd voor een kleinere krijgsmacht, maar wel een betere (die truc hadden ze vast uit Den Haag).

Op dit moment telt de Chinese marine zo'n 260.000 man personeel, met zo'n 50 destroyers en fregatten, 60 diesel-electrische onderzeeboten en honderden kleinere vaartuigen. Kwalitatief gezien is het vooruit gegaan, maar het is nog altijd niet wat het moet zijn. De laatste 10 jaar worden dan ook veel oude schepen uit dienst gesteld en vervangen door minder maar betere schepen. De missie van de marine veranderde van een statische kustverdediging naar een actieve verdediging, meer buiten de kustwateren. De marine wil in de toekomst echter uitbreiden naar een zeemacht van wereldformaat en wordt door Chinese politici steeds meer gezien als een mogelijke "oplossing" van het conflict met Taiwan.

Zover is het nog niet, China loopt niet alleen achter op Europese marines, maar ook op andere lokale marines als Taiwan. Het gaat dan vooral om luchtverdediging, radartechnologie en C4I (command, control, communications, computers and intelligence).

Toch is vooruitgang te zien. Zeker toen in '97 de Luhai (Type 052) te water werd gelaten. Dit was opnieuw een stapje in de juiste richting van de Chinezen, al voldeed het niet helemaal. In september 2002 bereikte de Chinese marine een nieuwe mijlpaal: de destroyer Quingdao en bevoorrader Tai Cang hebben voor het eerst in het bestaan van de Chinese marine een wereldreis gemaakt en o.a. Canada, de VS, Griekenland, Egypte, Portugal en Brazilië aangedaan.
De Quingdao in de VS, tijdens de wereldreis in 2002 om de capaciteiten te laten zien van de Chinese marine.

Toen bleek dat de Luhai het enige schip in de klasse was, begonnen de geruchten al snel op gang te komen. China zou volgens deze geruchten eindelijk met een (voor Chinese begrippen) revolutionair schip komen, een schip met eindelijk een echte verdediging tegen luchtdoelen. Of dit is gelukt is nog niet duidelijk, maar het ziet er naar uit dat ze behoorlijk in de buurt zijn gekomen.

China heeft namelijk een tijdje terug de sinds lange tijd in aanbouw zijnde schepen DDG 168 en DDG 169 (Type 052B) te water gelaten. Naar verluidt zou de 168 enkele weken terug vertrokken zijn voor de eerste proefvaart. Beide schepen zijn de afgelopen jaren gebouwd in Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai en hebben (naar verwachting) veel meer mogelijkheden dan voorgaande schepen.

De verbeteringen betreffen onder andere de SA-N-12 Shtil-1 SAM's (Surface-to-Air-Missiles) voor de middellange afstand en Russische Front Dome doelaanwijsradars. Al zorgde de Shtil-1 voor behoorlijk wat problemen op de nieuwe Indiase schepen van de Talwar klasse.
Opvallend verder is de stealth-eigenschappen van de nieuwe schepen en het 100mm kanon, dat wel erg veel weg heeft van het Franse Creusot-Loire 100mm geschut.
De 168 vlak voor haar eerste proefvaart enkele weken geleden. De boeg heeft veel weg van de Zeven Provinciën klasse.

Type 730, een kopie van de Nederlandse Goalkeeper Als de foto's beter bestudeerd worden, is te zien dat aan beide zijden achter de brug de vertrouwde Goalkeeper uit Hengelo staat! De Chinezen noemen de Type 730, maar is in feite een kopie van de Goalkeeper. In de kranten en het jaarverslag van de inlichtingen- diensten werd het een tijdje terug al bekendgemaakt: Chinese en Russische spionnen zijn in Nederland sinds enige tijd behoorlijk actief. Toevallig?

De 2 Type 052B schepen (168 en 169) zullen geen gezelschap meer krijgen in de klasse. Inmiddels is een nieuwe klasse ontwikkeld: Type 052C. Twee schepen in deze klasse zijn op dit moment in aanbouw (170 en 171). Het zijn naar verwachting schepen met een waterverplaatsing van zo'n 7.000 ton met een Chinees systeem vergelijkbaar met de Amerikaanse systemen die gebruikt worden aan boord van de schepen. Een enorme verbetering op gebied van C4I dus.
De 170, van het Type 052C, wordt gebouwd in Shanghai.

De Type 052C schepen lijken sterk op de Type 052B, maar het grootste verschil is wel de 4 vaste phased array radars. Vergelijkbaar met de schepen van de Amerikaanse Arleigh Burke klasse, de Japanse Kongo klasse en de Spaanse Alvaro de Bazan klasse. Dit zou betekenen dat de 052C de eerste Chinese destroyers zijn die zullen worden voorzien van het nieuwe (verticaal gelanceerde) HHQ-9 SAM systeem voor lange afstand. Dit systeem wordt waarschijnlijk opgesteld voor de brug en net voor de hangaar. Naast de achterste mast zal naar verwachting het nieuwe supersonische raketsysteem worden geïnstalleerd tegen oppervlakte doelen (SSM) op lange afstand en natuurlijk ontbreken de Chinese Goalkeepers niet!

De snelle bouw van deze vier nieuwe schepen zeggen genoeg over de ambities van China. Zeker nu ook geruchten gaan dat nog grotere schepen worden gepland: Type 051C met een waterverplaatsing van 8.000 ton en opnieuw modernere systemen. Reden genoeg voor de rest van de wereld (met name Japan en Taiwan) om China en haar ambities goed in de gaten te houden. Marineschepen.nl zal dat in ieder geval doen.

History: The west leg of this U-shaped route was renumbered from NM-160 in 1970. In 1988, it was combined with NM-477 and whatever the frontage road along I-25 was called then to form a continuous route.

Improvements: Two-lane paved road

Comments: This was one of the more bizarre outcomes of the 1988 renumbering. Yes, it's a continuous route, but it almost turns back on itself. Worse, it creates confusion from two closely spaced exits along I-25, both numbered for NM-161 and identically signed (NM-97/NM-161/Watrous/Valmora). There was really no reason under the criteria used for that renumbering to change NM-477, and it would have been more logical to extend NM-161 along what is now NM-97.

Het lijkt eerder een geslaagde photoshop, maar wellicht zit er toch een kern van waarheid in: deze foto van de Alfa 147 opvolger. Na de Alfa 159 durft niemand meer te gokken op een Alfa 148, dus dopen we de 147 opvolger maar tot Alfa Romeo 149. De 147 opvolger zal waarschijnlijk gebruik gaan maken van stijl elementen van de Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione, vooral de achterlichten springen in het oog.

C-17 PROGRAM NEWS AND SUPPORT IN THE PRESIDENT’S 2009 BUDGET PROPOSAL
In December of last year I was elected Recording Secretary for the Western States CAP/PAC and selected to attend the National CAP Conference here in Washington, DC.
Prior to leaving and in preparation for the conference, we knew that the President’s 2009 Budget Proposal was being published on February 5th and as in past proposals the C-17 Program was over looked and that Congress would have to fight, once again, to secure the program and get it addressed in the ’09 Budget. Timing was good for this news and our trip to Washington, so I initiated a letter writing campaign for support of the C-17 and to set-up appointments with Senators and Representatives to correspond with our time here in Washington.
We arrived on Saturday morning and began to strategize with other Union Officers, Representatives and Retirees attending the conference from across the country. While many of our CAP Representatives are from the auto industry, there are also Nurses, Teachers and College Students. I brought our focus of aerospace and the C-17 program, our workforce and jobs to the table.
On Tuesday UAW International President, Ron Gettelfinger and the Region 5 Director, Jim Wells made arrangements for me to speak with Public Relations Representatives and the Press in an effort to get our story about the ’09 Budget and the C-17 out to the national media and news. I was prepared with lists, charts, maps and statistics regarding the humanitarian, military and national security aspects of our plane as well as the 8.4 billion dollar impact the shut-down would have on our economy.
Our Representative Linda Sanchez was a speaker at yesterday’s conference; which gave us another opportunity to get additional support in getting our message heard. After the conference and meeting with Representative Sanchez, we went to the Capital Building and spoke with Senator Diane Feinstein. Senator Feinstein and her staff are part of the team supporting funding of the C-17 Program. They released the following statement regarding the ’09 Budget and the C-17: “The C-17 is the workhorse of the U.S. strategic airlift and will continue to be so. But unless the Pentagon begins to fund this critical program, we are in real danger of losing our capacity to produce this tremendous asset and meet the growing transport needs of our future warfighters.” (www.feinstein.senate.gov)
Today we met with Senator Barbara Boxer and briefly spoke to Senator John Warner (R-VA) of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Lescha betonmolen SM 145 S WE met handwiel-arreteerschijf, 140 l, 0,55 kW, 220 V

Het belangrijkste van een betonmolen is de "juiste mix". Alleen de Lescha veiligheidsbetonmolens zijn dan ook in staat om binnen enkele seconden het materiaal perfect te mixen. Dit komt door de kogelvormige trommel en de speciale mengijzers. Hierdoor heeft de Lescha kuip geen "dode mengzones" en het mengsel bevindt zich altijd in het actieve bereik van de mengtrommel.

Op de bovenstaande foto’s kunt u het verschil tussen een betonmolen zonder en met voetrem zien. Door de ‘echte’ voetrem laat de trommel zich traploos in elke gewenste mengpositie instellen. Omdat i.p.v. een stang een staalkabel wordt gebruikt, is het remsysteem niet gevoelig voor verbuigen of stoten (met b.v. de schop).

Met het handwiel-arreteersysteem, zoals afgebeeld op de SM 145 S met handwiel, kunt u de trommel trapsgewijs in 7 verschillende mengposities brengen. U doet dit door het handwiel naar voren te kantelen, vervolgens draaien en dan weer te arreteren.
